Puppy Class

Puppy Classes

A new puppy is amazing right….right?

Look, who doesn’t love a new puppy? We sure love a new puppy but that doesn’t mean puppies can’t benefit from training early on.

This class is meant for your dog that is between the ages of 3-6 months but can vary depending on each individual dog’s developmental stage. Our puppy classes are a one time, in your home, 1.5 Hr private lesson. This one time class is designed to be a pre cursor to a Board & Train program or an Obedience Lessons Program. Because puppies meant for this class are not yet old enough for E-Collars, we developed this class to give owners the tools needed to train at home and prepare their pup for future training.

So, What do we work on in a puppy class? We work with owners and their pups on the groundwork for establishing manners, basic obedience, as well as the other lovely behaviors that come with a new puppy! It is our goal to provide owners with the tools needed to help with housebreaking, food manners, stopping resource guarding before it starts, basic obedience commands, crate training, and preventing destructive behavior.

During the puppy class, we will instruct/show you various techniques and tips on how to effectively house train your pup. While many people choose not to crate train their puppy, we HIGHLY recommend it and will go over different ways to help you create a “safe space” with a create and how to effectively get your dog to trust this scary object.

Crate training is so important for dogs and we cannot stress enough how helpful it can be early on and as your dog grows. Countless dogs deal with anxiety and other emotional issues that can often be helped or calmed with proper use of a crate and can even make for a much more enjoyable experience for you dog in the event they are boarded, spend a night at the vet, or even just go to doggy daycare for the day.

If you have thoughts of sending your dog to a Board & Train for future training, having them comfortable and secure with a crate can make their transition into the Board & Train environment that much less stressful for them. By attending a Puppy Class with Headstrong K9 Training you will gain the tools necessary to start working with your pup at home and create the foundation that will help you and your dog down the road.

A puppy class is so much more than just laying down the groundwork for learning commands too, you are also creating an environment in which you and your dog develop a stronger bond with more trust and confidence in each other. This is one of the most important aspects to an obedient dog at home and out and about!!

Why haven’t we mentioned SOCIALIZATION?

The socialization window for puppies typically runs to about 4 months, depending on the puppy of course. Most socialization needs to happen between the ages of 8 weeks and 3 months. During this timeframe it is vital to your puppy that they experience new sights, sounds, smells, people, and animals.

We want to show our pets that people and other dogs don’t have to be scary and can add to our enjoyment! Once our dogs are beyond the age of 3-4 months we move more into a desensitization approach over a socialization one. This is also vital as there may not have been an opportunity to expose your new puppy to all of this crazy world just yet.

By introducing your puppy to new things, in small quantities, we can work through any potential fears or anxieties. We know that once you and your pup complete a puppy class and take all these tools and resources home that you will see just how fun and rewarding it can be to start the training early and before you know it, you will be back for a Board & Train or Lessons Program!!

If you are unsure as to whether you and your puppy should attend a class, ask yourself a few questions to decide!

  1. Have I struggled with or would like to crate train my dog?
  2. Do I intend to do more training with my pup in the future?
  3. Is my puppy showing signs of resource guarding or reactivity?
  4. Do I want my dog to still be a fun, energetic, and playful dog all while being obedient and consistent with commands?
  5. Do I want to give my dog the best life ever, full of freedom, adventures and all that this world has to offer??

Did you answer Yes to ANY of those questions? Give us a call and let’s get started on the adventures today!!

So many of our clients that choose puppy classes are either first time dog owners or haven’t had a new puppy in the home in quite some time and just need some help. Many others, simply want to get a jump on training and want to learn as much as they can!
